hi guy's I'm new at this so hope some one can help, I just picked up a used GM Teck 1 Scan tool and would like to know how to run it. i can go through some stuff on it but like setting idle up and what about tdc, & timing , + and - ,, the book i have with it is not much good , some place on web I could find out how to set stuff up on my truck that will stay set when changed with tool, ?? thanks
twotrucks, where are you located? When I got my Tech1A I ran into the same problem. I found the local tech Rep in the area and he stopped by and checked the meter out for me and showed me how to use it. When I needed to upgrade the software he was able to help me out again. The factory will tell you that they don't support the Tech 1 anymore but my local tech rep is very knowledgeable and more than willing to help me.

If any one out there could help me get time back to -1.76, i believe that's what it was be for I thought I new what I was doing, I would sure appreciate it.. Thanks
two trucks-
when I'm setting my pump using the tech 1 and not getting numbers in the range I like...you can cheat and vary the idle,,, that will allow some of those more desirable numbers to show..
hope that helps

hey thanks rameye, i took truck into shop yesterday and had time set up, stupid me. thought i could set it up just with tech tool ,, went back to #5 res in pmd and time at -1.47 ,(have to go look) or very close to that.. runs ok just still have engine light come on for pmd fault only at 1700 to 2100 rpm, still cant fig that out...thanks for your help, i'll get better at this the longer i work at it or keep the truck, and i plan on that.... thanks again.
truth is that you can set the offset from the tech 1...matter of fact its the only way you can set it...
You have to set the base timing manually by rotating the pump...that's probably what they did under the hood...
next time you get stuck with that tech 1 give me a shout out

Hey All,
Where did you all get your scantool at and how much did they run you. The ALLDATA stuff says I need a tech 1 but it was said that they dont offer support for it anymore. Does a Tech 2 work on my OBD I 1994, and if so how much do the tech 2's cost. Any answers would really help us in a good direction, and as always, thats for your time and a special thanks to the more experienced persons on here and the valuable time they spend helping everyone experience the deeply impacting feeling of keeping an American Bowtie strong and on the road.

I have a GM Dealer tech 1..bought it on Ebay for about $200 then I had to seek out the data cartridge for my year..that was $75 (there arent to many of those data catridges running around).
I could be wrong bought I thought that a Tech 2 could do anything a Tech 1 could do...that is communicate with both OBD1 and OBD2. I didnt get a Tech 2 because of the $$ factor.
I'm pretty sure that if you search this forum you'll find a few threads about a software package you can load on your laptop that does everything the tech1 and tech2 can do! They might even be an advertiser. This was not an option at the time I bought mine...I think its the way to go ...unless you can pick-up a tech1 with the right cartridge on the cheap.

I have it and use it on my dad's 95. It works great for setting the timing and doing other diagnostics and it's easy to use.
You'll just need a laptop and a ALDL cable to run it.

Thanks Rameye, still not sure how i got the time off just by playing with tech 1 tool. took a look at time today and see it's set at -1.23 , this done by shop. I guess that's ok would have liked it around -1.50 , . still afraid, to play with stuff on tool, other thing that i just don't get is why engine light comes on ,hot or cold at 1,700 rpm and goes off at 2,200 rpm, or when rpm get below 1,400, and set's code to # 36 inj pulse width long,? tool tells me it's at 2.30 and jumping around. i have got pmd on pump unhooked, and have had 2 others remote both do same thing. i am starting to think i have some sort of other prob other that just the pmd ,, for now i have pmd hooked up behind front bumper. seems to be ok there and a lot cooler than on intake manifold. I don't have a laptop, just inhouse comp.didn't think i need one to run teck 1. Anyway still afraid of playing with tech till i know exactly what or how to get through it step by step, still looking for some sort of book,, thanks for the help,
morepower did an article on the tech1 and how to use it a long time ago...He graciously reprinted it for me and I'm pretty sure I saved it....E-mail me and I'll try to get it over to you...it really should help.

As far as the pump posting codes...once the tdc offset goes above 2.02 it will put up a code...I'm not a OBD 1 specialist but this I know.
You really need to to set the base timing correctly by moving the pump, and using the tech 1...then do the offset procedure...then see if it still puts up codes. The numbers pretty much jump around all the time.....I found my new timing chain reduced the spread that they would jump...making it somewhat easier to grab the number I wanted. I'm running factory spec right now @.50 With a new chain and gears I didnt feel I needed to compensate anymore...it runs very well and gets reasonable economy provided lead footed wife is not driving :)
Get the base timing and the offset right then you can rule out other weird stuff...
