My 700R4 is showing its age after being purchased used 12 years and 100K miles ago. She's been a great tranny, but she's starting to smoke and smell bad and I can't keep the converter locked up anymore.

Since my '81 is mostly used for towing trailers and ends up sitting most of the time, I'd like to swap in an NV4500. I'm having trouble locating a used tranny in my neck of the woods.

I need everything: transmission, bellhousing, slave cylinder, clutch, flywheel, clutch/brake pedals for an '85 and newer truck, etc. This is for a 2WD application.

If you have any of these parts, let me know.

arveetek@jscomm.net or pm me.

Finding a good used NV4500 will be tough. These guys have rebuilts or parts. Shipping is great and their tech support is great too. http://www.drivetrain.com/

Dave is sales knows his transmissions.

If you cant find a Chevy, you can change out the input to convert a different one. Dave can probably tell you just what it would take.

Truthfully, my searching has found that it is often about the same price to get a truck with a NV4500 in it than to buy one separate - god forbid rebuilt. Even if you paid a bit more, you could likely part out enough other pieces from the truck to make up for the difference.

That's kind of what I was running into as well....

I was hoping to keep this swap budget around the $700 mark...

Am I dreaming? :D

I haven't seen a NV4500 sell for that - and then you're likely going to add in the cost of a new clutch and other wear items no matter what.

However, I'd say that there is some chance of keeping your budget if you could find a donor vehicle and then part the rest of it out. Of course, that means having the funds up front to purchase the vehicle and then the trouble of parting it out...

I'm guessing that rebuilding the 700 would probably be cheaper than the swap.

You'll be lucky to get the pedal assembly for less than $100; I've bought two assemblies this year and my average is well over $100 each, for the pedal assemblies.

Hope you find what you are looking for and get a good deal. My project is on hold until I save enough money for the NV4500.

I'm assuming a '93 1500 gasser truck won't have the NV4500?

I found one with a 350 and 5-speed manual, complete truck for only $700. Owner doesn't know what tranny it has, though.

But I'm pretty sure that the NV4500's only came in 3/4 and 1 tons, correct?

For the most part you'd be correct.

I sold my '97 K2500 5.7L/NV4500 to a guy who wrecked his '95 K1500, which also had an NV4500. I guess there could be some oddballs floating around.

Have you checked http://www.car-part.com or http://www.mypartshop.com ?

As far as I now, only the 2500 HD and 3500's had the NV4500. Anything else wasn't in a position to need it. Easiest way to find out is look under. If it looks like everything from the bellhousing to the tail is solid=NV3500. If you can see that the bellhousing unbolts and the tail piece as well=NV4500. At least that's how it goes as far as I know.

You can also check the RPO code in the glovebox. MW3 = NV4500.

I had the owner look under his $700 truck, and he told me the transmission was all one piece, so that rules out an NV4500. I figured that was a shot in the dark...

Depending on the owner, I'd take a look at it myself. Just sayin'...

It's around 70 miles away....so I'm going to assume it has the light duty tranny....

Well, distance does make a difference. Could he take a picture and e-mail it to you?

Just that too many times I've found people don't know what they are talking about... Latest was the other week at the auto parts store. Walked in and the sales kid practically greeted me at the door to ask what I needed. I explained, he thought a moment, and said they didn't sell those... Almost walked out the door, but turned around, went back to where I thought they would have them, picked one up, and took it up to the register to pay for it... :)

An easy rule of thumb if you can't look underneath yourself is to remember that the NV4500 went with 8-lug wheels. I've never seen an exception--2500HD, 3500, whatever, if it had 8-lug wheels it had the NV4500, five and six lugs got the NV3500. Nice and simple. And btw, the NV4500's with the low first gear (6.34) had a different RPO MT8 instead of MW3.

Just for reference, I've parted two trucks now with 2WD NV4500's and got $700 and $600 for the tranny/bell/shifter combo.

Good luck with your project!!

I think all the 6.5 TD's regardless of lug count got the NV4500 or the 4L80E.

I think...

I believe you're right. Even my 6-lug 1500 Tahoe has the 4L80E.
