I would like to replace a Chevy 454 gas (8 miles to the gallon) with a 6.2 diesel, how would the 6.2 compare as far as power at the rear end.

with a turbo it will give you close to the same power at the wheels, and N/a it will have about as much as a 327 chev

and about 18-22 mpg

More Power

A turbocharged 6.2L diesel can compare favorably to a mid-late 1970's or early 1980's stock 454 in pulling power. I'd expect close to 180 horsepower and 350-380 lb-ft of torque at the crank with a 6.2TD. A properly equipped 6.2TD can achieve twice or more the fuel economy of a carbureted 454, whether pulling or running solo.

Without a turbocharger, you could be disappointed with the power, but the fuel economy will make you smile. :)

We owned a 1986 Suburban 2500 4X4 with the 6.2.
That truck had 4.10 gears and a 400TH tranny. It got 22+ Hwy and 16-18 city MPG
The power was good too. It would pull our camp trailer just fine.

If the 6.2 is in good shape and the injectors and IP are up to snuff the power is quite good.

Now the venerable old 454 is quite a beast, but as you know it like to eat!

If you have a need to fly over the mountains with a heavy load in tow the 6.2 is going to be a little bit of a letdown, otherwise it will get the job done.

Aa has been mentioned a turbo will greatly improve things.
