When did GM go with electrical fuel pumps?

We're discussing that topic at another forum. Nobody knows for sure, so I decided to ask the pros :-)

In my 1998 DP Troubleshooting Guide on page 11 I read this:
"Since 1988, all GM diesels come factory with an electrich fuel pump."

Now, there are different opinions:
- since 1988, but only new body style
- since 1991 when all series are new body style
- since 1994 when GM went to electronic fuel injection

It would be of great help, if someone could clarify this.

Electric fuel pumps started with the GMT-400 tooling. 1987.5 (Jan-Mar, 1987) or M/Y 1991 (~Sept, 1990), depending on the chassis introduction. There were a couple exceptions, with the chassis/cab, 3500HD, vans, and MH/utility chassis with the 6.2L lagging one or two years.

That said, I have seen "oddballs" with "out of design" pumps. So, if someone calls BS because they say they have or seen one, they may have. Why? I don't know. Even GM doesn't have an explanation for everything they've done, or do.

The Burbs, Blazers and crew cabs held the old mid 80's body style until 91 on the Burbs and Blazers and the crew cab had the old body style even into 92.

The 6.2's in these trucks did not get much of the design changes including the serp belt system and likely the electric pump did not follow either.
I had a 91 Burb with a 6.2 that was little different than the earlier ones.

Yup its a mixed bag for sure.

My 1990 Suburban has a mechanical fuel pump and V belt pulleys.
