Had my first breakdown on Sunday afternoon with the Blazer since I got it 5 years ago. Pulled up at a red light and just as I was about to pull away I heard a 'pop' and the engine stopped.

Tried a start. Sounds normal but no smoke from the exhaust. Pushed it out the way and pulled the return hose from the IP. Nothing came out when cranking. Pulled the inlet hose plenty of diesel when cranking. Left the ignition on and pulled the power lead from the shut off solenoid and made and broke contact several times. The solenoid was clicking away. Methinks the pump siezed or the shaft snapped.

So now i'm removing the IP and fitting the pump from my spare engine which is a C spec. When I removed the spare pump it turned out to be a J spec which is what I need. If I had the time to spare I'd go the dual idler route but i need the car running as soon as.

Sorry to hear of your problem. Let us know what the source of the "pop" was. Good luck!

Thanks Jim,

Pulled the IP from my spare 'C spec' engine. What luck 'J spec' pump. Pulled the pump from Shrek and confirmed the shaft had sheared internally. Fitted my spare on Tuesday but due to work didn't get it fired up till Thursday.

She ran very rough and smoked like a Lum (Scots dialect for chimney stack) so I'm thinking the pump must've siezed causing the timing to jump a tooth or two. It's now 4pm on Saturday after another long shift at work and I'm just about to start ripping the front of Shrek to bits to check the timing properly. Doesn't get dark here till after 11pm in the summer.Looks like it could be dual idler time.

Simon.

Pulled the front of the Blazer apart on Sunday. With the crank pulley at TDC the timing marks on the pump gears were a few degrees past where they should be. pulled the timing case and removed the pump gears. The timing chain was only just inside the tolerance for lash but the sprockets lined up. When i tried to remove the chain and sprockets I found the problem. The woodruff key on the camshaft was bent where the IP drive gear is mounted.

Tonight I'm going to fit a replacement and if everything lines up hopefully get it running again.

I know when its this far down I should fit a gear set but I need the car running this week as I'm at a couple of shows at the weekend and cant afford the waiting time for delivery.
