Went to start the old Chev after work the other night to be greeted with a real bad grating/stripped ring gear noise:eek:

Didn't try again just had it recovered to my mates workshop where we found the starter bolt that goes in the block had snapped of flush with it

The front bracket was a little lose aswell:rolleyes: We got the old bolt out and put a new thread in there so all is good now;)

Sounds better now when turning over then when I got her

The reason the starter bolt broke was most likely that your starter is missing the starter - block bracket. It supports the rear (heavy motor end) of the starter.

If you don't replace the bracket, you will continue to break starter bolts.

Good luck,

K

I've run 3 6.2's without the bracket as the previous owners had removed them.

Only broke a bolt once, never had a problem in the one that I drove 180K after i fixed that bolt. Always carried extra's and removal tools incase though.

I always put new bolts in whenever I removed the starters though. Which wasn't often, but occasionally.

At least the bolt is metric, shouldn't be too hard to find over there if you need to.
