I've run into a nasty snag with my diesel conversion. The starter hits the drive axle that goes under the oil pan. It's about 1" too long.

Things that may work are:
- A starter that's about 1" shorter.
- A starter that's gear driven, but has the motor high and not low (like stock).

Does anyone make an after market starter?

This is a show stopper.

The other option is to have a flex plate made that's the Olds diameter (and tooth count) but with the bolt pattern and balanced for the 6.2/6.5. I'm not sure that easy either.

I could use a lead on where I might find one of these things.

Thanks,

Hi
Which starter have you tried?
There are two stock starters,Gear drive and big direct drive, looks like a older gasser starter only a little bigger.
There is a company in the states that all they sell is starters and alt, plus repair kits for both.Their name is DB Electric's???I'll try to get their Number if nowbody else posts. They should be able to tell you if there is a hi tourque starter with the same drive as the 6.2-6.5 starters, mabey even build you a custom unit.I think the mounting for the starters is the samr for the GM diesel and gassers.
Hope this helps a bit.

Both the direct drive and the gear reduction drive are the same length. I have one of each now.

There's some hope if the diesel starters and the gasser starters mount the same on the block. I can make a bracket for the shorter starter.

I have Thursday off. I guess I'll know more then.

Thanks for the help.
