View Full Version : Air Cleaner Mod and Noise

After reading on this forum about modifying the air cleaner on my 93 and other similar models (and about the increased noise from the engine) I came up with the following:
1) Removed the intake muffler and flexible corrugated rubber connector
2) Cut a similar sized oval hole in the driver's side of the lower air cleaner housing
3) Cut/modified flexible corrugated rubber connector and attached it with 4 sheet metal screws to the oval cut out on the driver's side
4) Attached a section of 4" dia flexible aluminum dryer hose to the original "snorkel" on the passenger side and taped/clamped it
5) Attached a section of 4" dia flexible aluminum dryer hose to the corrugated rubber connector and taped it (temporary?!)

Now originally I attached the passenger side hose to the fender well connector where the original intake muffler was attached. I noticed the engine was very loud on the passenger side so I disconnected the hose from the original fender well connector and faced it to the front the same as I had the one on the driver's side. Eureka! Much, much quieter!! The hollow and undampened wheel well was amplifying the noise from the engine.

I realize that I may not be getting the coolest air into the engine esp. at idle but the noise reduction seems to be equal to having the original intake muffler attached. The only way to tell is to put it back on and that is NOT going to happen! My model does not have any room/cut outs in the front to route the duct so, I just pointed them to the front to the sides of the radiator.

The only problem with this mod is that the oil dipstick is under the 4" duct on the driver's side - measure twice, cut once. It usually take me 2 or 3 tries to get something the way I want it or the right way - trial and error.

Not many people here in the U.S. have a 90's truck with an NA 6.2L. Most of what GM did produce went into the Canadian market. So, we don't have a lot of experience with the related air filter setup like you're using. I do know that on the 80's body style trucks, the air inlets were just outside the radiator in the rad core support - facing forward.

Incidentally, it would be really easy to install a factory 6.5 turbo system in your truck.... ;)

I guess that would explain why no one has responded. Thought I was doing something that would be useful!? I was not aware they were that rare. That probably also explains why I had to go to Minnesota to get the truck. Wonder if it was first sold to Canada?

The best info I had a few months ago when I was looking was that I would need to get a 6.2L NA if I was going to get a 93 K1500 without electronic controls/IP. Did they make a 93 6.5L K1500 without electronic controls/IP? I understand the 94 & up 6.5L have electronic IP.

Why am I not surprised that you mentioned that?! Your are exactly right, that would be a great idea if I was going to keep the engine. God willing, I hope to replace the engine in 2 to 3 years with a Cummins 4BT(A) - esp. since there are several sources for trans. adaptors, flexplates and motor/accessory mounts. Stock it has almost 100 lbs-ft more torque than the 6.2 and with a Dodge or DMax CAC it should be over 100! And with a little (very little) propane........ My aim is economy with good power. Best so far on the 6.2L is 24.9mph hwy!

I do not want to cut air inlets outside the radiator until I would fit a CAC - trying not to bugger up everything too much. I hope to be picking up my Diesel Page manuals from my brother in a bout a week so I can start doing research!

By the way, I have a sweeet 6.2, that appears to be the magic '599, that will be available when I am ready to install the 4BT!!!!!!!!

Maybe in about 3 years the wife and I can show up at the Annual Pulloff! I know I will not beat any of the current production trucks but maybe my engine will be the story of "The Little Engine That Could"! Never been to Montana (or any of the Northwestern States) so, it would be a good excuse. Just got to convince the wife!? Might be able to see that other famous place in Montana as well - you know - the one that has that water that shoots up.

BTW this is an excellent, excellent forum and the manuals are "top drawer" as well!!! Keep up the good work!

The 6.5 TD with mechanical pump was never certified for light duty emissions (under 8600# GVW) here in the states. Not sure about the NA version, but I don't believe it was available in '93 anyhow.
