View Full Version : New to EGR
I just recently purchased a 2005 lly, not for sure if i up graded or down graded from and lb7. I have been looking around and researching, this whole EGR is new to me. I am planning ahead and looking at doing some modifications, first i was wanting to get rid of the cat (this truck is off road only) i have read this will set codes, my truck has NE1 emissions so i figure it will set a code and keep the SES light on. Project 2 i would like to get kennedy custom tune, i know this can help with the EGR but what about the exhaust problem of setting codes. Would it be worth my time to install a fingerstick and blocker plate untill i get the EFI live, or should i go about it the other way around and get EFI live first and by then the exhaust. Any help or info would be appreciated. Like i said this is all new to me, i had pretty good grasp on the LB7 and now i changed.
thanks

Removing the cat can be a problem for those who live in areas that require diesel emissions tests. Here in MT, diesel owners do just about anything they want, but I don't know if areas within SD do. Be sure to find out before any mods are made.
Kennedy has had an LLY for 3 or more years now, so he should know what works best, as far as exhaust mods and whether any codes will be set. :)

I have yet to see or hear of anyone getting in trouble for emissions stuff here in SD. Like i mentioned before truck is used for off road use only wink wink. I would like to here JK's input, i know this topic has been beat around, like i said before i am new to all of this EGR stuff. Just wondering what steps or what should be installed first. If i could get away from the fingerstick and EGR blocker with the use of Kennedys custom tune that would be great
EGR is evil. The best thing you can do is rid yourself of it.
While we do offer the "band aids" to take care of things like EGR related codes, adding boost, etc I truly feel there is a better way.
I can do so much better in one custom tune that does it all. I see this all the time where people have bought generic tuners for their vehicles, then spend $145 or more to take care of codes and the parts (boost) that these tuners aren't smart enough to do. I just don't see how these guys can reason adding fuel without boost. Add the band aids to these tunes and it helps, but they run nowhere near as well as they could.
I really like my LLY. It's my workhorse and my best mpg truck.
John,
I have read about your custom tune from many posts on this website. I know you have the ability to make the EGR not function through your tuning abiltiy. Is there a way to get around the codes that would be set if the cat were to be deleted, or is the only way around this with a fingerstick. I do not want to go with a generic tuner and have to add the boost stick and all that stuff, i just soon wait and do it right and get your custom tune. Would you recommend going with an exhaust system first and eliminate the cat, if a person were to do that then run the fingerstick and EGR blocker plate, and then down the road get your custom tune. Or what would your recommendations be?
thanks
No need for any band aids at all with my Kennedy Custom tunes. Can do it all and run with stock or mod exhaust however you prefer.
Some may find it hard to believe, but my 2007 LBZ is bone stock except for the tune. I have far more daily driver/towing customers than I have race customers so I wanted to focus on making the tuning work with a stock truck. That and it is SO nice and quiet. I just wish it was a Crew Long. I'll be moving this one (she won't let me have 4 and she doesn't want the 07 for herself) to make room for the 08 or 09 LMM.
I suppose some day I should do the exhaust and see if I can cross the elusive 22mpg line...
John, thanks for your time and comments. I already have a back up ECM waiting on the shelf for this very reason. I just need to save up a little more money and i will be giving you a call and getting one of your custom tunes. One other question, with your 2007 you mentioned stock exhaust and your tune, do you have any problems with EGT's? 95% of the time my truck is used for towing, roughly 12,000lb. Would it be more beneficial to get rid of the cat with exhaust and then tune? thanks for your time, i always learn something from reading your posts, your comments are greatly appreciated.
I think there is true benefit to a full 4" system, but I also think you could manage without. You might try without and see where you end up. I have a lot of customers running my tunes with otherwise stock trucks. Stealthy and quiet. The problem comes with the LMM as it's been known to load the DPF on factory stock trucks let alone tunes trucks.
