I recently purchased a 83 blazer with a 6.2. The previous owner installed the banks sidewinder turbo. I purchased this mainly as a tow vechile for my boat which ways about 4500lbs with gas and gear. I installed an aftermarket tranny pan to help keep my transmission run as cool as possible. At this time I added a trans temp gauge to monitor my trans temp when towing.I took it on a trip this past weekend with out the boat and I saw my temp peak out at 195-205 degrees.I am wondering if this is a normal temp or running hot.

Welcome aboard!

195-205° is an ideal peak temp while towing this time of year. You will see it higher when towing in the summer, but don't worry about occasional temps up to 240°, and as long as it comes down when off load, it'll be fine. Temps will be higher during more driving with an unlocked torque converter. It should not be that high during normal (unloaded) highway driving. It may get that high, or a little higher, during summer city driving, and still be well within a "normal" safe range. Using a good synthetic ATF will give you an additional 50° safe range, if you become concerned about the temp, and an auxiliary cooler wouldn't hurt. This time of year is generally not the best time to set standards. Too cool.

Thanks for the info I was not towing anything this was going over a moutain pass with some grades. I was told that the sythetic ATF was a waste for older trucks? I am going to install a after market cooler and possibly a new radiator.I think the one it has is orig.:)
