fuel filter?

So, as stated in the photo newbie forum, i got a new old suburban!

I work on diesels for uncle sam, but in generators, not automobiles. Anyways, the fuel filter design looks pretty lacking. . . Doesnt look easy to prime, and autozone wants 20 bucks a piece.

Anyways, there is a port that looks like a vacuum port or a fuel line of some sort. looks like it would be for 1/4 inch flexible line or smaller. what is it? there is nothing on it!!!





also i would like to add more fuel filters to the truck. Some co-workers suggested a CAT universal, they are supposed to filter to 3 microns!

Any suggestions on filters? what do you run and why?






Fuel additives, cleaners etc: I use sea foam a good bit on all my gas engines and at work sometimes. It seems to work wonders. . . does anyone here use it? what do you use to clean out your engine and why?

Cheapest easiest, simplest way to add a CAT Filter is to purchase a Permacool Fuel Filter / Water Seperator Kit ($35.88 at Summit Racing.) and a CAT 1R-0750 filter from a CAT dealer for about $11.00.

Permacool makes 3 filter heads that use the 1-14 Thread (which is what CAT uses on some filters).

I have used / expeimented with different Perma-Cool Heads and CAT Filters with my Vegoil Setups.

The 1R-0750 Filter should flow plenty big enough for any 8 Cylinder engine but, if you want to go nuts get a 1R-0749 Filter ($16.00 at a CAT Dealer), it's huge and also works with the permacool head. I have one on the Permacool #88864 High Flow Filter Head on my Vegoil Prefilter.

It works OK but, clogs pretty quickly so I will probably not keep using it on the pre filter. I am looking at some CIM-Tel filters to try on the prefilter next.

The two micron filters are used usually as secondary filters on newer rigs and there is usually a higher micron rating water seperator / filter before the two micron. Like a 175-2949.

For the past couple of years though CAT has been subbing the 1R-0749 and 1R-0750 for higher micron rating filters like 1R-0712 (10 micron) that are the only fuel filter used on older rigs, read this page. So they can be used in single.

I have seen allot of debate on different diesel sites that other manufactures X-ref filters aren't as good as CAT's. At $11.00 and $16.00 a pop for the Original CAT's I'll stick with them but, a while back I did make up a Cat Filter X-ref in case I ever needed a filter quick.

I like it. now just have to figure out where to put it in relation to the stock filter
