I was told by a few people to try here as they had previous sucess with locating the TV cable bracket to hookup a 700R4 to a 6,2l Diesel. I'm looking to do this in my 86 1 ton 4X4. If anyone has one I'm in need of one. I've check all the local yards to no availl. I need someones help on this one.

Also what are your thoughts to putting a 700R4 behind a stock 6.2? Keep in mind I don't do heavy towing, I dont drive the truck hard, I wont be running tires any larger than 33". I really just want the overdrive gear for the highway due to the steep gearing I have (4.56's). Most transmission shops I've talked to are not impressed with them. But I've heard of several people that have installed them with no alterations other than the fleaxplate, torque converter, and a lockout switch. Would it be unreasonable to expect to be able to do that? If I drove the truck light will the 700R4 hold up? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there.
I am going to assume the truck has a Th 400 now???

The 700R is not a bad tranny but you need to do some very serious mods to make it worthy.
The 700 is only a "good" tranny in its later years of production and then only after some serious aftermarket parts are added.

88-91 box (Just before they went to the electronic version) 4L60E

The clutches are very small as are most all the other components.
One very weak area is the input drum and shaft assembly.
The input shaft has a buttload of holes and passages and is pressed into the aluminum clutch drum. The splines wobble out over time and then they either rip out or the drum cracks and then the spines go.
There are some aftermarket rebuilt drum assemblies that have a hardened steel sleave pressed over the hub area in the drum to stabilize and reinforce it. This comes with a special clutch piston too.
The sun shell is also a POS and the aftermarket has several items to replace it. One in particular is called "The Beast"
The sprag's and roller locks all need to be replaced with HD units.
The 3-4 clutches are light and need to be increased in number and also special HD ones used. The 2-4 band is also weak and needs a HD one installed.
Basically its take a good usable box and gut it and then start over with a pile of special parts and go from there.

The hydraulic controls need to be tweeked with the addition of a good shift kit. (My preference is transgo)

The planet units are weak and should be upgraded to heavy aftermarket units. Oh and lets not forget the Pump assembly, it needs to be upgraded to a 13 vane style to provide the needed oil flow and eliminate some hydraulic issues common to the earlier pumps with lesser numbers of vanes.

To make a long story shorter, the 700 is fine for a Blazer sized rig even with a 6.2 if it has all the trick stuff done to it.

To really make a 700 worthy is a project that will run you a few thousand at a reputable tranny shop.
I have done a few of these and did a real killer for a Blazer I had a few years ago. This cost me in the area of $1000 in parts, bits and pieces and I did the bench work plus the R&R ( I also scoured ebay and craigs list for a few months to find many of the parts at very reasonable prices)

For a 1 ton I personally would stick with the 400 as it is almost BOMB proof and add a gear vendors or other good add on overdrive.
This will give you the result you seek and maintain good dependability with a lot less hastle as far as the retro fit

The 700 is just not a great tranny for HD use at all.

The 4L80 would do the trick but needs an electronic controler to run it and the costs can get up there.

An old 400 even though its origins go back to the 60's is still a force to be dealt with, and a good dependable gear box.

I think you can do an add on overdrive a lot cheaper and have a better package than you would by installing a 700.

Also the 700 will not bolt up to a T case in a 1 ton (If you have a 4x4)
The output shaft on the 700 is smaller than the 400.

Now if your truck has a stick shift the idea is still the same, use an aftermarket OD unit.

Good luck and let us know how it all shakes out.
