Converting to 4wd soon . . .

Hey guys, I have a 1985 C10 Chevy Suburban with a C code 6.2l. This summer I plan on buying a cheap 4wd parts truck for use in converting my burban to 4wd. I know the frames are the same with exception for the engine and tranny crossmembers, which are bolted on. This conversion should be simple if i have a parts truck. I just have two questions:

1) What size gas engine crossmember matches that of a 6.2L? 350? 454?

2) I noticed the engine crossmember is attached by rivets. Will grade 8 bolts be satisfactory substitutes for these rivets or is there a way to re-rivet the corssmember when i swap it over?

I'm guessing you have upper and lower control arms being that you have no 4x4, all the 4x4's of that era were leaf spring hung.

You can install lots of different frt/differentials using the coil spring setup you already have, just decide which side the t-case will be dropped, find the diff you want, then use rear stay arms to hold diff in vehicle along w/adjustable panhard assembly.

When a rivit is (properly) set it swells up to fill the hole to an interference fit. The result is no movement between the secured pieces. Bolts can't do that.

I'm not sure about an '85 but I converted a few '68-'72 chevy trucks to 4x4. Its not as simple as you may think. A LOT of parts needs to be changed. It can be done but it may be better just to sell your ride and buy a factory 4x. If you are going to go through with it, I suggest you buy a complete junker to get parts from.
