I am trying to remove a leaking injector pump from a 1984 6.2L Chev. engine.

I have followed instructions from Troubleshooting & Repair Guide page 60 (Fuel Injection Pump) and at the point where I am trying to remove three bolts from gear thro oil inlet hole. Got two out but engine will not rotate (Either way) enough to remove the third bolt. Cannot complete a revolution.

Anybody got any ideas? I removed all belts put it in nuetral reread manual maney times and cussed a lot.

How are you rotating the engine over?

I do this (although others tell you not to), use the starter to rotate the engine. I literally just "bump" the key where the starter just barely engages and rotates the engine over. Sometimes it doesn't sound too good on the starter, but it hasn't hurt anything yet.

The reason for not using the starter to bar the engine over (from other adivise) is in full revolutions to get at the bolts. Like I said, you can bump it over where it just moves to the next bolt, sometimes it takes multiple mini bumps to get to the next bolt.

If it's truely locked up the starter ain't gonna turn it, then, the truck might be related to Satin, or something.

I am turning engine over with a socket and breaker bar on lower pulley at crankshaft.

I turned it clockwise and counter clockwise. It turns some and then comes up against something solid.

If I cant turn it with a bar I am afraid to try the starter. It dosent feel like compression.

Remove all the glow plugs. This will do 2 things for you. It will relieve the compression, and confirm you don't have any "fluid" in a cylinder(s). If a cylinder is hydrolocked, it will feel like you hit a brick wall when trying to rotate it.

In any case, it should turn over easily (relative term) in either direction. If it is "stopping", you have a problem. Find the reason before you try to go any further. Not doing so can lead to some very unpleasant forthcomings.

Yep, skip the starter method.

Dmax's advice above is golden in regard to removing the glow plugs, this will cause the engine to no-longer generate compression, and also see if a liquid is in a cylinder.

I think you guys hit the nail on the head. After I removed the intake I packed head with rags and scrubed engine with kerosene and then hosed it down.

I bet water got in and froze. Now due to my stupidity what can I put in there to melt ice so I can blow it out after removing glow plugs.

It is outside,no garage,it is in a motor home,moving it would be difficult. Flathead

I doubt you'd be able to rotate it at all if a cylinder had frozen water in it. But I suppose it is possible.

If it still has coolant in the block, just plug it in. The block heater will warm it up enough to thaw out any chunks of ice in it within a few hours. If your block heater doesn't work, you can use a fuel fired heater or forced air heater, but it will take longer. I've never tried it, but I've heard of someone wrapping the engine with an electric blanket. I have no idea how long that would take, though. Be very careful if you still have any chance of a puddle of kerosene anywhere on the engine.

Definately do not want to use the starter.
When our Burb lost the head gasket another family member ran the thing from the barn to the house but parked it so I could not get to it easily to get the engine out.

I was on it in less than 5 minutes, tried very carefullyto bump the sucker through a little at a time to see if there was water, BAD PLAN.
BANG ripped two teeth off the ring gear and broke one starter bolt off.

Dont do it.
I like the plug it in idea myself. Toss a little tranny oil in the cylinder to help prevent rust while you wait on the thaw.

Great ideas

Based on your suggestions I think I will plug lower outlet,mix up coolent pour it in upper outlet untill full. Then plug in engine heater. Hope heater works.

I have been wrenching since fall. Fix one thing another two things need fixed. Making me angry but I am determined to get this wreck on the road if I dont run out of money or die of old age. Thanks everybody Flathead
