I have a 1996 6.5L Diesel in a Silverado with 151,000 miles and have an occasional problem where upon rapidly de-accelerating (foot removed from pedal) the engine will shut off.....yet will then re-start fine. No codes thrown. When it shuts off it is like the ignition switch is turned off.
Check for diagnostic codes.
Try running a double dose of fuel additive. When decelerating, the PCM cuts all fuel to the engine until it reaches the desired idle speed. In 4th gear, there is no engine driving from the trans, and sometimes the speed overshoots (undershoots?) the desired speed and the pump is to slow to catch it in time. I believe this is due to a sluggish fuel solenoid. Anyhow, when mine did it, FPPF additive cured it.
