View Full Version : Mixing Glow Plug Types

I have a few GPs out. I can't afford 8 right now, but I can swing 2/month.

I'm told the AC 60G is the hot ticket. Is it wise to mix the GPs? Do the AC60s require more time to get hot, at the risk of causing others to fail? I'm sure the stock controller configuration is at no risk, though.

I guess the real question I have is, what are the specs of the 9G, 11G, and 60G, and why are the 60s more desirable? With that info, I can keep from 'letting the smoke out". :)

Sure, you can mix types of glow plugs. There could be some slight differences in how well they heat, which could produce some slight difference in how the engine starts. As long as the engine still starts OK, you won't hurt anything.

The 11G & 60G are both "PTC" type glow plugs. PTC is an acronym for Positive Temperature Coefficient, which means they are thermally self-regulating at approximately 1400 degrees F. Theoretically, once the glow plugs come up to temperaure, they'll not get hotter or burn out. The AC-11G was phased out because it didn't offer as good a reliability record as the AC-60G. The 60G may be a little bit cooler, but most report not much change in starting ability.

The ealiest 9G glow plug would burn out after 15-20 seconds of continuous glow time. The 60G can glow for a reported 8 hours without burning out. I've glowed them for at least 15 minutes without a problem.

Excelent. Thanks for the info.

It sounds like the 60G is just what I'm looking for. They'll be even more nessassary when I put in my (expert use only :D ) momentary 'push to glow' button.
