Hey guys, just bought a 2006 Silverado with a LBZ and was wandering what you guys are running for winter oil? I was thinking the 0W-40 Rotella TSB. they say it is CJ-4 engineered. My only concern was that the 0W might be a bit thin. I don't have the truck yet, i am picking it up on Saturday if all goes well!

Good question. I have been running Delvac 15/50 synthetic year 'round and plug the trucks in below 0 degrees F. No starting issues, we let them warm up before rolling "...until you see some slight movement on the temp gauge."
Interested to hear what others are doing. What does the your owners manual call for?

I haven't picked up the truck yet so i don't know what the owners manual says. I have jetta diesel wich i run 5W-50 in the winter and it really seems to like it. But it's just a little baby diesel!
I started running the 5W-30 Rotella T Synthetic in all my vehicles.
Those listed below plus a 2002 Grand Am, Ford 1510 compact diesel tractor and our 6 1/4 horse push mower.
Now I only stock a variety of fuel, oil and air filters.

i have been running 0-40 in my truck since october. Ran 0-40 in my 6.5L TD year round., never had any problems with it. a few guys have said that switching oil is the worst thing you can do....not sure ... but i plan to run 0-40 in this one year round. extended oil changes as it is a full synthetic oil. about 8000 kms well see ...

you will notice slightly lower oil presure . I run reg shell non syn oil year round , I have also run shells syn oil 5-40 . At times I have mixed one gallon of syn oil to reg shell (ran out of one type ..) Honestly if the temps are above -10F anything is fine extream cold put syn oil in it.

I picked up the truck yesterday ( i love this thing!) and finally got the owners manual. The manual calls for 5W-40 oil for winter ( below 0F) does anyone other then Amsoil make a 5W-40 oil that meets CJ-4 specs? Rotella TSB only meets CG-4.

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5w-40 full synthetic is CI-4+ (later formulation than CG-4). I read something from Mobil they will be certifying it for CJ with no changes to the oil, in the near future (meaning the oil meets CJ, but isn't yet certified). Our Walmart started carrying this oil a few months ago. Pricey, but in line with full synthetics (which don't include Castrol, Rotella, and a couple other popular brands, regardless of their label or price).

Since you're from North Bay, I thought I would reassure you that 0-40 is a good move. I have run my backhoe, welder and diesel generator year-round on 0-40 for years. I have also had 6.5 diesels that winter annually on Esso's product.
I now have a 2006 Duramax, and it is getting the same treatment. I am in forestry, and I hear often that 0-40 (and 0-30) oil in the logging equipment saves thousands each year. The machinery is cold-started usually, and the oil reduces expenditures on starter motor and battery replacements, not to mention downtime.
Go down to Paul Lizotte Fuels - they sell it by the case. When I go, I ask for "my favourite", and Claude returns with 0-40.
John, also in North Bay.

i have been running 15W-40 in the summer and switch to 10W-30 for winter in my 2006 duramax.
last winter it started as cold as -40 without plugging it in. it was a little slow cranking over, but i let the glow plugs cycle twice and it did start on the first attempt.
but i try not to do that if i can......i keep it plugged in as much as possible

Thanks Deerejohn, I couldn't find any 0W40 in north Bay I was thinking of doing the amsoil 5W-40 since they are the only ones that seem to make it! I went to the local GM dealers and they don't even stock 5W-40. You think the Dealer would stock what was in the owners manual as a recomened oil!!!! Where is Paul Lizotte Fuels. Yellow pages only picked up sudbury?

They are on Birch's Road - 474-1800 is the number I think. Their main office is in Sudbury, and they service the north from Owen Sound to Kirkland Lake at least. Good people.
Change your rear diff fluid too, if you haven't done it. Everyone reports that the rear diff is only 1/2 full from the factory - mine certainly was. 75 w 90 is what that takes. Sit down if you buy it by the 20 litre pail - it's not inexpensive.

Thanks Deere John, I ended up at Mackay fuels ( the shell dealer) and they had 5W 40 Rotella T SB full synthetic for $25.79 a 4 litre jug and wix filter was only $7.75.

Yep - that is a good place too. You can't go wrong with their products either.
