I am in the process of installing a 6.2L, a Getrag 5 speed, and an np241 into a full size jeep cherokee wide track. I bought the motor so I can run it on WVO that i'm making on my campus, for the [slightly] better mileage, and mainly because it will be awesome to have a diesel 5 speed Jeep. I plan on taking it on a lot of road and camping trips, you know, 8 hour drives, a few hundred miles, that sort of thing. Is the bottom end going to explode and leave me stranded somewhere? Do those girdle kit thingers really help? Is this just a viscious rumor from the Cummins fans?!? Basically, I just want you guys to tell me if I can rely on this motor, or how to make it so I can. Oh yea, if you don't mind, please give a quick bit of credentials when you post, I've heard so many things from so many people, I don't know who to believe, I bet half of them never even heard a 6.2 clatter....sorry if it's a long post....

Thank you!!!!

No, I highly doubt that your 6.2 bottom end will blow up one day unexpectedly. It can happen, but is not as common as some people think. When you rebuild it just be sure not to grind the crank, just get it polished. You can get it index ground if you are getting it blue printed and balanced, they have done this on the power project truck and many others have done this for high power applications. Studs do help distribute the load better, so that cracks will not form. The girdle is an unknown, but it can't hurt anything. I built a thick beefy one for my engine, because they give you a piece of angle iron in the kit that you can buy. Also make sure to get a new balancer or even better a fluid damper. Some also recommend getting a new crank if possible. With a manual transmission I have heard that it is important to have the correct crankshaft end play.

I have owned two 6.2's. One ran for 23 years and was treated horribly by my father. Its only problem was a leaky head gasket and tons of blowby. It never let me down, even after my father gave me the truck and I took it four wheel'in multiple times. I also built a new turbocharged 6.2, with all the fancy bells and whistles. I believe a broken crank or block is not going to happen unless I do something to cause it.

If you rebuild the 6.2 be sure to hot tank the block and check the 3 center main webs very well (mangaflux) for cracks that go through the outer bolt holes and down into the block.
If the block is crack free at this point the little creture will probably live a very long life span.
I have had 6.2's that I bought at 100K plus on the clock and ran them well over 200K.

If you put it toghether well it should serve you a looooooooooooong time.
Good luck with your project

Well I don't have the funds to rebuild it. It has under 100,000 miles on it, and I bought it from a friend that I really trust and knew he took care of it. If I'm not rebuilding it, is it a hastle to instal studs? I'm not exactly sure where the studs go...can someone clue me in? Also, some one said to pull the oil pan and look for cracks along the the block inside of the harmonic balancer, so I think I'll do that. How do I replace the balancer anyhow?

thanks a lot guys, this forum already beat the others that I've been on. The others usually just say "the bottom end will explode, buy a cummins" or "that's just a rumor," but they never go into detail. so thank you, and keep the info coming!

Had a '82 Blazer for awhile that had a Banks turbo on the 6.2 for over 110,000 miles and it never had any bottom end issues. It had been rebuilt before then but still ran stock compression ratio, ran up to 11psi boost. It had been used for towing quite a bit so it did get a workout.

The stock 6.2 in my big and heavy Suburban has over 240,000 miles and is still getting 20 mpg. Your light jeep with a 5 speed should last forever.

Yeah, that was me!

I have a 6.5 in my Grand. I love it. Still working out little bugs and still learning more and more about diesels but it is running great and is getting better. I have about 10K miles on it so far.

271k miles on the Suburban and 258k miles on the Blazer, both original engines and I do tow a pop-up camper and horse trailer (not at the same time). Sub gets 17ish mpg unloaded and the Blazer gets 22 city and 25ish highway.

The thing amazes me everytime I fill up and yes, I've checked the accuracy of the odometer. It's got 3.73 gears with 32" tires, 700r4. I bought it with 235k miles and have NOT done anything to the fuel system or engine and it runs a level or 2 better than my Sub. It actually has a little more power and does not smoke hardly at all compared to the Sub and I've replaced timing gears, IP, injectors, adjusted timing on the Sub to make it run better. Hmm, maybe that's why the Sub does not run as good... I've done the work myself :)

I don't really baby it or make any extra effort to try to maximize economy. I just drive it normal. I guess it boils down to wear condition of the engine and how well previous owners took care of it. Although, I bought the Sub with 130k miles and have meticulously maintained it since then. Alot could have happened in those PO 130k miles!

tURBO ?What tires do you run?
SOunds kinda like my blazer-
I 'd guess the gears to be low 3's though w/da 700Rfer

Turbo? I wish!

Tires - some generic all-terrains that were on it when I got it. Seem to perform well.

The Banks intake is aftermarket for Non turbo?

Subzilla

Oh yea, I did remove the "c" intake manifold and put on the "j" engine intake

Banks intake - consists of removing the restrictive plastic factory snorkel that runs from the air cleaner to the radiator support, enlarging the air cleaner opening and replacing with a Banks snout and duct. You use to be able to buy these parts separately from Banks and I'm not sure if they make them now. I can hunt the parts numbers if you want them.

i don't know if this group is just more optimistic than the other forums, or if you guys actually know what you're talking about, but i'm going to assume it's the latter and that my motor isn't going to be a big let down.

thanks for all the first hand accounts, you have all restored my faith in the motor, for a little while there i was afraid it was a waste of money. I just got my trans mounted up and all i have left to do is weld in the motor mounts and hook up the radiator, hydroboost, exhaust, and driveshafts. I definately still have my work cut out for me, but it's getting closer. I can't wait to get this thing on the road, a 5 speed diesel full size jeep should be a blast to drive.
