View Full Version : 4L80E transmission longevity - gas vs. diesel

Seems to me that the 4L80E transmission holds up incredibly well behind the 6.5 diesels. Not many posts on here about transmission problems.
(Probably a good thing, if the 6.5 trannys were bad too, we'd probably all have given up and bought Duramax's or Powerstrokes!!!) smile.gif

My '97 K3500 5.7 gasser went through two 4L80Es in the 130K I put on it. Never towed anything close to what I put behind my 6.5s daily.

Is this due to differences in the gas vs. diesel internals, or does the transmission somehow benefit from more low end torque behind the diesel? In my very unscientific observation, the more torque, the longer transmissions seem to last. The least powerful of my vehicles in the past seem to have developed the MOST transmission problems.

Anyone else seen the same thing?
