I just swapped a 700r4 in my 85. The swap went fine, and everything seems to be working properly. The only question I have is around the 1st to 2nd shift. This seems to take longer than it should, the engine seems to rev higher than I would like before shifting into second. I know the ratio jump is bigger than it was in the turbo 400 that it replaced, but is it normal for it to hang onto first for so long? What sort of road speed does your 700r shift from first to second?? I appreciate the help.

Hello

First off, what did the tranny come out from behind?? Gasser or a diesel.
The gassers have a different governor than the diesels

How did you adjust the TV cable?
This is very critical for trans operation and longevity.

The correct procedure is to unlock the cable adjuster and slide the adjustment towards the firewall as far as it can go. Next you romp the throttle all the way to the mat to set the adjustment.

The test is to do a light throttle upshift (very light on a level roadway)
tranny should do the 1-2 at about 15 MPH. As soon as the shift happens, mash it and the tranny should drop right back to 1

If there is not a 2-1 downshift you need more TV pressure meaning the cable adjustment is incorrect.
Normally if the brackets are all in good order and the cable is also in good shape then the primary adjustment will be perfect.

Thanks Robyn, from reading your post and some of your other posts I'm thinking it is probably the TV cable adjustment causing the issue. When I installed it I moved the IP lever by hand to adjust the cable vs using the pedal. I'm wondering if the ip lever moves farther by hand than it would by the pedal so the cable is out to far? Can you explain exactly what the TV cable does when it is being pulled out? I appreciate the help.

Oh, and I forgot to mention it was out of a 6.2 diesel military truck, so I got everything I needed including the TV cable and brackets... This was a recent GM Goodrench rebuilt K case trans with the 208 transfer case already on the back of it, so it was an easy swap into the truck, and the lower RPM in 4th with the tc locked up is awsome! I can't wait to check mileage again.

Update: I went through the TV adjustment again at lunch time this time using the pedal to adjust it as reccomended, and then took it for a quick test drive, and it seems to be working perfectly. Shifts much sooner into second now, and feels great. Thanks!! :D
