What are your EGTs like?
Egts are low never more than 650 and it only re.....ally smokes black when i mash on her, then it can get a little obnoxious.
It sounds like the turbo isn't spooling up adequately. It could be the turbo or the wastegate controller.
I don't see how you could have much black smoke for any length of time and not exceed 650* egt. Something doesn't make sense...

Its a '93 no vacuum pump or wastegate control solenoid to worry about.
What's your turbomaster set at? I have mine on a 94 TD set at 8 1/2 psi with stock 6.5 and I see a little black smoke when I really floor it. But it's not too bad. Also make sure (which i am sure you have) your air filter is clean. But, it may just be that your turbo is starting to fail and you aren't getting enough air from your turbo.
Put the new turbo on today, yesterday i put the 4in and the crossover from ss. Got my turbo master on. She sounds and runs great, smoke black only under a load until turbo spools up good. A little too much clatter might set timing back a little to quitin her up a little. Since i did the timing before the turn up and all the goodies.(GM3 TURBO)DIDN'T KNOW should OF ASK IF THE GM8 WOULD FIT. BUT SHE RUNS GOOD.
