View Full Version : Blue smoke at night?

So I finally got my 86 M1008. It has 43K miles and seems to me at least to run great. One thing i've noticed is that only at night with a car right behind me do you notice a light film of blue smoke comming out the exhaust. If you stand right next to it in a well lit area, no smoke. Durring the day, no smoke that I can see. It only seems to be at idle or very low rpm. Seems to clear out once you start moving. This is my first diesel and this truck is pretty nice so I don't want to ruin it. Any suggestions? should I even worry about it? Also I can hammer on my truck and I don't ever really see any black smoke like most other diesel trucks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Does anyone have the GM part number for the threaded plate to install a water temp gauge in the heads? Ive been looking for a few days now and can't find anything.

The night conditions with the light just allows you to see it.

Depending on if the injectors are the originals or not a fesh set may clean this up.

I have seen this from many 6.2/6.5 trucks and other brands at night.

If it starts good and runs ok and the mileage is ok I would run it and enjoy.

Best

for the GM part number, the dealer should be able to look it up for you, its the same as the plate the factory temp sender threads into.
I'll look for it for you.

ccatlett1984, thanks, I appreciate that.

Robyn, thank you too. everything else is great. I get between 16.5-18mpg with the truck and thats with the 4.56's. Starts fine, seems to run fine. I have no idea how long it sat, but it did sit somewhere. My father was hinting at the same thing you said but as being neither of us have ever owned a diesel before, better to get an idea from people who know and own them. I'll be sleeping a little better now. I love this truck and would hate to see something happen to it that could have been prevented.
