i am ready to drop in my new 01 motor I have decided to update the cooling fan and clutch, i am purchasing from ss diesel says severe duty clutch engages 15 degrees earlier than stock. they reccomend 180 t-stats what do you guys think? what are you running? what is best?

You will get many different opinions but I think the 195's are the best all around.

If you do a search, you'll be overwhelmed by the various opinions on Thermostats.

Basic thory seems to be that diesels like to be running warmer than Gas engines. I've still got my 97 cooling upgrade in the garage, so I have time to decide, but have acquired 2 195's to put in.

MP did an article on the 180 - showing they were fully open at 195. Greg L and others have run 195's in Texas, etc. and are happy with no overheating. The answer may revolve around a fan clutch that kicks in sooner, and a fan blade that pulls more air.

I am thinking of going 1 180 and 1 195, but jeez, too many opinions. Search away - Merry Christmas.

Your mechanic told that if you install their severe duty clutch and 180

All here have given good advice....

Peninsular Diesel told me a few years ago that they install 160 degree t-stats in all their marine 6.5's. The Duramax uses a staggered set (temp wise) of 185's.

You can learn more about my thoughts on t-stat temp ratings in the article we did a while back on 6.5 cooling (http://www.thedieselpage.com/members/features/65cooltipsc.htm).

We report, you decide.... :D

I rencently updated my fan clutch and went to a 190 and 195 thermostat set up. Was running 180 and 190 but as a lot of people here said that a diesel should run hotter so I thought I would try it. So far the last few tanks of fuel have showed improved fuel economy. I went with a sd fan clutch that I got from carquest. They are made by hayden. I already had the duramax blade installed.

I upgraded my cooling system on my Dually to the 97 and up setup Dual stat setup with the High output water pump and 180 stat from JK and I have broken 170 degrees once it generally stays about 165. when it broke 170 it went to 190 and it was over 100 and I had the air on I also have a new radiator. Now when I talked to JK about this he said it was normal considering I wasn't pulling anything. I am thinking about going to the 195's just so I can get alittle more heat

The tempurature is not the problem. Ideally, the engine will run much better with greatly increased economy at temps around 230
