View Full Version : PMD location info
I tried several locations to find the coolest place to install my remote mount PMD. I drove the truck about 15 minutes on each test let idle for 5 minutes and used infrared gun to check temp of pmd cooler. Temp was about 88 here today. Engine temp is about 170-180. Used up a whole bag of wire ties. Some will not like the test but good info for me. Just thought I would share. The intake was the worst place to install the cooler based on my observation.
On the intake 207 deg
on the firewall 198 deg
next to drivers battery 190 deg
In the air box of air filter 177
On the skid plate 163
behind the bumper on plate behind license plate 96 deg

Not a bad test at all. Sounds very similar to what I did many moons ago. I think you've found what we discovered long ago. Unfortunately, others around the net refuse to see it, and make bank on less than optimum performance and longevity. It's amazing what you find if you actually go look for it. This happens all too often, and not just with the FSD. Good job!

Yep, have 2 outside engine/motor bay (1) leading edge of driverside wheel well, (1) lower edge of frt/bumper both catch lots of air, and yes (1) in the the stock location is new unit too.
Triple overkill somehow feels better, or perhaps its Murphy that taught me well.

Good Day!
Thanks for the info. I'd always rather work from actual data than guesses.
"next to drivers battery..." Could you be more specific please?
Thanks & Blessings!

On the rariator suport in front of the left battery. There is even a hole that lets air through too.

That is very close to where I installed. In front of the left battery. Anywhere in the engine compartment is no good.

Good Day!
Bummer - that's where mine is; gonna have to move it again. I had thought it would be a lot cooler than that in that location.
Blessings!

I was always able to hold my hand on mine on the warmest summer days. Are your readings taken while towing?

Nope, just driving the truck and then a 5 minute idle. It does not seem to matter in the front bumper position. It will heat up the longer the idle about enough where its hot to the touch not to hot that you cant hold it. Drive 5 minutes out and check it. Just barely feels warm. The 5 minute idle is where they all started to heat up. The battery position was not bad untill idle time. The intake and firewall made no difference it was so hot you could not touch it. The skid plate stayed about even did not seem to matter much. I should have recorded numbers before the 5 minute idle time.

Interesting, i thought we put this subject to bed long ago. What size cooler do you use? Dosen't one of the advertisers of the ''Page'' use a skidplate mounted cooler with a great warranty?

I didnt measure it. Bought the cooler and a new PMD.
Great test.
I know all of you seasoned members cover this stuff over and over, but us new 6.5 owners really appreciate these posts.
Who has the best warranty on the units?
