Edge box failures

Sounds like the Edge box failure rate is significant. Has anyone tried isolation techniques, or mounting to a heat sink? Not sure what the warranty implications would be, but curious...

I think your on the right track mark , my edge ran really hot and a heatsink and small fan is a great idea for those of you that still have a good box!

Regarding edge box failures, I never did agree with mounting on the electrical fuse box, mine's been mounted on the cross frames near the firewall and fender area where the cool air blowing through the headlight area can go through the fender and exit near the rear of the left front fender. Been there 2 years now no problem. Also don't use velcro, it acts as an insulator between the box and the surface you mount on, the box can't transfer the heat unless the surface of the box contacts the surface of the crossmembers (big heat sink) that it is attached to on my truck.

Does the battery act as a heat sink?

My edge juice has been mounted on top of my left battery for the four and a half years and 65k miles it has been on my truck. I have not had any problems. It is mounted with velcro from Jo Ann fabrics, and the box was a reman when I bought it.

This picture pretty much says it all. The battery does get hot in the summer, as does the edge box, however being mounted to the battery allows the box to get a steady breeze when the truck is moving, also it provides 4 or 5 inches on top of the box for airspace instead of being tucked up to the hood on top of the fuse box. The above is half fact, and half theory, as I have never, nor do I ever plan to ride under the hood on a hot day to see how the wind blows, LOL. http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s232/Tater1977/edge.jpg

I always just let mine flop behind the electrical center and never really had any problems except for the old shut off with the wipers thing way back when.

That said, I have had a fair number of customers come to me with out of warranty units and switch to my KD Custom tuning. Feedback has been excellent.

I ran an Edge for 2 years before switching to Predator. Had the head related issues. In my discussions with the Edge people, they felt the heat aiyexw was due to high underhood temps. Because of that, I went with an insulator around the Edge module, to shield it from surrounding high temps. A pocket made from insulating aluminized bubble wrap. It worked, at least no more shutdowns. When my 2 year warranty ran out, I switched to another product.

A heat sink moves heat from high to low temps, down the heat gradient. This would work if the Edge box was the source of the heat, and you wanted to move heat away. Since the Edge people felt the temp source was underhood temps, putting a heat sink on the Edge module would only transfer more heat to the module.

That was a while back, so maybe the folks at Edge have a new theory or something.
