What is this for? Water in fuel sensor, or????? How is it hooked up, only one wire? This line ran from the mechanical pump to the fuel filter on a 1983 6.2.

Heats the fuel.

Only one wire going to it. I'm pretty sure it runs all the time, summer or not.

This piece sits in the valley on the motor. the threaded nut end goes to the primary fuel filter that is mounted on the intake manifold and also grounds through it. the wire from it should be pink in color and is hot through the ign switch all the time. As state in previous post heats fuel all the time winter or summer. on motors without the primary filter (the one that is a nightmare to change) on the manifold this piece is absent.

It would be good for a veggie conversion? Is it needed for the diesel fuel?

If it works it would be fine in the winter up your way.
Hook it up with a switch as you dont need heated fuel in the summer.

The heater has an internat thermostat. If the fuel is <39F, the unit turns on, otherwise it's off. Per the electrical diagram in my 1983 manual.

That years filter design is the pump draws fuell through the firwall mounted filter first (sorta under a vacuum, better to remove water in the fuel), then pressurizes the fuel flow through the heater then the 2nd filter on the back of the manifold, then to the IP.

The vacuum inside the first filter is why its such a bugger to prime with the engine fuel pump. Don't open the petcock on that filter mount. It just relives the vacuum you're trying to create.
