View Full Version : Banks Turbo Wastegate Control
I am in the process of installing a TE06 Banks turbo from an early model Ford 7.3. This has been done before here:

The question I have is, what controls the wastegate? Is there a mechanical controller similar to the one from Heath Diesel available for this application? Is anyone from Oliver Diesel out there?
thanks,
Bill

Is your turbo equipped with a wastegate or is your turbo missing the gate arm?
Typically, this wastegate is mechanically controlled.
You simply shorten the rod from the wastegate actuator by loosening the locknut and screwing in the rod connector on the end that normally connects to the wastegate flapper arm.
The wastegate also receives boost from the compressor housing, which over-rides the mechanical aspects of the actuator to some degree.
No other interraction is necessary.
But, it's also possible that you got another version of the TE06H, there is a non-wastegated version, no clue on A/R on that turbine housing.

This turbo has a vacuum canister looking controller. It has a rod running from the WG to a canister with a vacuum hose running from it. I contacted Bill Heath thinking I could replace it with a mechanical controller but he said he's not familiar with that turbo and doesn't know if his controller would fit. Oh...DUH....is the canister just a mechanical controller and the arm from the canister adjusted by loosening the nut and screwing it in and out? And the hose from the canister just a pressure release from the canister and not a vacuum connection?? Is there some kind of spring in the canister?

Welcome to real turbo actuators.
Yep, the canister does not have vacuum in it. It's completly self-sufficient in getting boost from the compressor housing, as stated above.
Just adjust the arm to be shorter to hold the wastegate flapper closed longer, more resistance.
Spring loaded with a diaphram (diaphram opposite to that of the 6.5TD factory B/W turbo).
Good to read you got the proper wastegated version.
I don't know if I'll ever get to use my TE06H turbo, I've devoted $ towards a better turbine housing for my T04B, found a Bolt-in (no downpipe mod) turbing housing of a better a/r ratio.

Yes on the adjustment.
The hose on the canister connects to a port on the compressor housing so that boost is fed into the canister.
I took the canister off and it looks like it's bent down on one side. Is this normal since it's mounted at an angle?
