View Full Version : Oil path in 6.5L
Can any one tell me how the oil flows through the filter, oil cooler, engine ect. Starting at the pump then goes where and through what lines, by passes and ending in the pan.
Also the ID on the fuel line from the filter housing.

I will elaborate some just so you will have the real deal.
Oil starts in the pan and is pumped by the oil pump through the cooler and then into the two lifter/oil galleries from there the oil runs the length of the block on both sides.
From these two passages the oil flows to an anulus groove behind each cam bearing. Oil is distributed to the cam bearings via little holes in the bearings
The oil flows from the anulus groove down to the main bearings.
The upper main shell has a groove in it. This allows oil to flow into the crank shaft and from there it flows out to each rod bearing journal.
On later 6.5 engines the main webs have oil spray ports drilled and fitted with little nozzles that direct oil from the upper main groove to be sprayed on the piston tops as they roll past BDC.
Most all newer 6.5 main bearings have 3 holes in the upper bearing shell and they can be used in any and all 6.2/6.5 engines regardless of whether they are spray blocks or not.
This type of oiling system is refered to as a TOP OILER.
Your HP engines generally are setup as bottom oilers so the crank gets oil first and the top end is restricted some to keep the oil pressure available for the rotating assembly.
The OLD 427 Fords were a SIDE OILER and had the main oil gallery along one side of the block and the cam and lifters got what was left over as they dont need near the flow that the crank does.
The coolers on the 6.5 are a bypass system as was previously mentioned.
The bypass is a little poppet valve in the block that allows high oil pressure to bypass the coolers to some degree.
The filter is in there too and is prior to the oil going to the engine bearings.

The filter lines are as follows
Line comes from lift pump up and over the back of the engine and into the filter housing inlet.
From here it passes up through the heater and then through the filter and on to the outlet. From the outlet the fuel flows through a 1/4" line down under the manifold and up to the top of the IP.
There is also a drain line in the lower part of the filter housing that connects to a small rubber hose that leads forward under the manifold to the water drain cock up front.
