View Full Version : oil spray jets??
I finally got my block back from the machine shop, six months ... whew...., anyway while checking it over I noticed that the spray jets are gone. All I have are holes of about .125" dia. pointing at the bottom of the pistons. Should provide lots of cooling oil flow but just a bit excessive I think :D
This is a 506 block, casting date of April 27, 1999.
I have used the search feature but it doesn't like any of my search words :(
What size should they be?
What material are they made of?
Are they field replaceable?
Is it possible they were aluminum and went away when the block was vatted?
Is there a better solution?
Inquiring minds.....

Well, I just got off the phone with the local Chevy parts counter. The "piston oil nozzle" comes in two flavors, 6mm and 8mm. I must go measure the holes and see which size I need but the real gripe comes in the price of these tiny pieces of metal. They want right at $10.00 each (local tax included).
Does anyone know the size of the orfice in the jet?
I will crank up the lathe and make the little beggers for that kind of loot.
Another question, would brass be acceptable for this application, gut feeling tells me it would but others may know better.
Thanks,
George

Your 1999 block is 6mm. Earlier blocks were 8mm, but the larger holes led to cracks at the main bolts holes.
No rocket science here. Do whatever works. If you have a lathe, do it. I would. Brass is fine as long as they are secure. I don't know the size, but you need to duplicate the orifice dia. to ensure correct flow and pressure retention. Did the shop say what they did with the original jets? I understand their removal for thorough cleaning, but why not replaced? There should be 8 orphaned jets laying around, somewhere....
I was really hoping that some one had a 506 block open and they could measure the orifice size, it sure would make this easier.:)
Anyone????
George
I have a 506 block on the stand right now but its an early one without spray jets and it has large bolts all the way. :( sorry
