So my overhauled 97 K1500 has about 6ooo miles now, and is using some oil. Not really enough to concern me, about 1 quart every 1000 miles. If it idles around alot it will blow some blue when you throttle it. I believe I went a bit too smooth on the hone job :o . Someone told me to try low detergent oil. Any other suggestions that may smarten it up?
Original block, low mileage pistons, new heads, gear drive and phazer, F computer and intake, mahle rings in standard holes.

Did you check the end gaps on a few rings for reference?
That would help tell what the bore wear might have been.
I forget what grit the machine shop uses, I've always taken it down for a hone a vat.
Are you getting much blowby? If not, perhaps it's your turbo blowing oil either out the exhaust side or the intake side (does happen).

Well, it's probably too late for this to help but on the other hand it can't hurt. Load the bed up with as heavy a load as she'll carry, go to the bottom of a long steep hill, and do full-power pulls to the top for about 1/2 hour. You might build enough pressure behind the rings to really force them against the cylinder walls and salvage a little bit of your hone job.

As mentioned tho, if you're consuming enough oil to notice, and it's from oil control rings, chances are that the compression rings have the same problem sealing. If so, you'd see sum blow-by for sure.

If your cylinder alls are glazed there's nothing short of re-honing the cylinders that'll help. If it smokes after a lot of idling, the turbo could be the source, or it could be crankcase blow by. How much blow by is there?
I had 2 6.5's and a Ford 7.3. All of them used around a quart every 1000 miles. The D-max is the first Diesel I've had that used less (~none).
