Injector pump - what details do I need to find a new one

I have a 1995 Silverado 2500 6.5 TD with 260,000 miles on it. The injector pump has been bad for some time but is still drives well even though the mileage stinks (10-12 mpg). It is just starting to smoke (for about 15 minutes until it warms up).

I am getting ready to replace the injector pump. What information do I need in order to get a new or used one? Where do I find this information? The pump has what appears to be a serial number it is about 10 digits long. Is this the number I need for a new Injector pump?

I know somewhere there is an easy answer to my question but I have searched this site and have not found it yet.

Why do you assume the IP is bad?
How many miles does it have (is it original)? When was the last time you replaced the injectors?

It's best to check the pump model number. I have a pic of the ID tag in my Tech Tips. So long as it's not a 5068 it will interchange with all others so a 5521 is what you'll get.

It has been awhile but I ran the diagnostic check (blinking light on the dash) and the number of blinks matched the table for IP problem. I did the diagnostic check when I first bought the truck about a year ago. Both the mechanics (a dealership and a shade tree) thought it was an IP as well. The truck has 260, 000 miles on it.

The truck ran fine up to about a week ago when it started to spew white smoke out. The truck always started a little hard but never smoked once it started unless I pushed it hard. Currently it smokes pretty significantly for about 15 minutes.

The SN on the pump is 342640005904 if that helps

I would love to not replace the IP. I can get injectors getting an IP is not so much fun.

White smoke ? Do you have to add a lot of coolant?

I have never added coolant.

If you don't know the history of the injectors, I'd replace them first. You'll want to replace them anyways.
My Burb has almost 260k, on the originial IP. I replaced the injectors last year and it made a world of difference. Mine used to smoke a lot.

How can you tell if the injectors are bad?

Most people will tell you that the injectors should be replaced every 80-100k miles, whether you think they are bad or not.

im wondering how u know u need this
My truck same year every thing,
massive amounts of smoke, rappid rpm change (example if im on cruise controll at 45, on flat ground rpms will change from 16 to 26 back and forth,
the smoke is like straight up soot coming out even at an idol, i was told bad turbo or injector pump, i was told any where from 1,000- 2000 to fix it my self!!!!!

If you are maintaining the same 45 mph, then that sounds more like a transmission issue.

Black smoke can definitely be from low/no boost, but that shouldn't make it smoke at idle.

Search around, there are lots of topics that will help you diagnose your problems.
