My '93 had a non-functional temp guage, i replaced the sensor in the head - works fine now. I think it was something like $15.

The temp gauge is fed off of the sending unit on the left head at the front. The scanner is picking up from the Coolant temp sensor in the water cossover.
The sender could be gunnysack or the gauge may have issues.

Try a new sender first then go after the cluster and check the floppy circuit panel for breaks and if there are no broken circuits try reseating the tapered connectors that connect the gauges to the floppy panel as well as clean the plug in the dash section and the copper strips on the floppy. You can slightly tweek the floppy panel where the connector strips are so when it plugs in that the connection is snug.

These can and do get hinky and will do all sorts of goofy things.

Good luck :)
