View Full Version : Low Beam "hood" removable ?

I have a 2006 Silverado 2500 HD with separate bulbs for high and low beams (but in one plastic housing) Over the low beam bulb there is a silver "hood" that appears to keep light from the low beam bulb from coming straight out of the bulb (only light reflected from behind the bulb can be reflected out). The Sylvania Silverstar replacement bulbs I just bought already have the tip of the bulb coated to prevent light from coming straight out the tip of the bulb so is this chrome hood inside the light housing redundant ( and can it be removed?) or will this screw up the low beam light pattern?

It is redundant with bulbs with the coverd tip. Removing the "hood" will screw up the low beam pattern, and be illegal in every state with regular/uncovered tip bulbs. Having it there does have an upside. It will prevent excessive radiant heat from blistering/yellowing the lens. At the same time, it should have no effect on the light pattern with bulbs that have the covered tip.

Is this something that just bugs you, or are you trying to accomplish something by removing it?

Just trying to get some decent light out them. Hopefully the Silverstar bulbs will make a difference (should for the outrageous $ they charge for them)
