Very often these issues are the starter.

A worn starter won't be able to turn over the engine at the RPM it really needs to bust off an run, especially in a no-glow situation where the engine's compression is making the start.

A dragging starter will hang on in there for quite some time too, making this issue harder to troubleshoot and resolve.

Also, good CCA batteries are also necessary for optimum cranking ability.
