There is a feature story in the June 2007 issue of "Engine Builder Magazine" which covers the new AM General engine block and several after market components designed to overcome some of the inherent problems with this engine. Perhaps "The Diesel Page" can get a reprint for every one to see.

What does SCCS on the valve covers stand for? What is the big accessory on left side of engine? I am guessing its a military alternator or generator I think they are 24v systems????

How much detail was written up in the magazine on the "new" engine?

That's either a really combat-hardened air filter with explosion-proof FSD, or a hi-output ac-dc Leece-Neeville alternator with explosion-proof regulator - got an early version in my garage, iirc takes ~4800-5000rpm for full output - wotta pain, that thing would be.

the article in Engine Builder Mag doesn't address the latest from GEP, but on the fact the blocks and heads are now available from the aftermarket. a little bit of old news. I tried to find more info on the article form Diesel Page, but that seems to be it. Does anyone think the valve covers are a little taller in the pics in the Diesel Page article? maybe roller rockers are under there?

I just went and looked at my truck valve covers GM stamped on them. I don't know what van/Hummer covers are like but the covers in the photo appear slightly different. The ends are more square for sure compared to my covers. I can't tell if they are taller. Probably a cosmetic change???
