View Full Version : Clicking Sound near Air Filter/ Turbo

I have a '99 Suburban 6.5 with about 138K miles, just returned from a long trip about 3K miles and now I hear a clicking noise near the air filter/ turbo intake. Sounds like an air compressor so I am guessing it has something to do with the turbcharger? No trouble codes or unusual exhaust smoke, and no noticeable drop in power, just a constant clicking noise that increases in frequency with higher rpm. Low oil consumption. Is my turbo on its last legs, or could it be something else? Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the 'Page, amkulesa........

Place both hands firmly on the turbo heat shield - while it is cool, of course! - with engine idling, noting if the ticking diminishes.

Also, the heater plumbing amplifies injector and valve-train noise on that side.

also the vac pump can make some funky sounds before going south...same area

A long screw driver makes a good stethoscope for probing for unusual noises. And it don't burn your hands. Or a length of fuel hose works well too.

Now I got to go back under the shade tree and take another nap....................;)

Looks like heat shield is tight, I will check out the vacuum pump this afternoon. Thanks for the help, this is a great site.

Is the metal to hose portion of the heater tube touching the valve cover on the passenger side of the engine? My 95 was making noise when I found the line was not anchored to the right spot on the intake stud.

The noise seems to come from the junction of hose where the air filter intake, turbocharger intake and crankcase depression regulator valve (?) meet. Sounds just like an air compressor pump. Can the CDR go bad? Thanks again for the information.

Whatta coincidence, eh!

The negative air-pressure pump is just below that area - check it out - remove the serp belt, crank it up, see if the noise persists

Did you resolve this clicking issue? I've got the same thing going on with a truck I just purchased. It's a 98 k3500.

Thanks

For what it's worth...My issue was a warped exhaust manifold on the turbo side of the engine. Exhaust leak between manifold and block. Take a close look at the manifold.
