For that size engine one would thing a V6 would be more efficient. Less parts, less weight than a V8 and all that kind of stuff!

I agree. At first I thought it was about the "smaller" V6 diesel that has been talked about - caught the V8 the second time I scimmed the message.
Is two liters difference going to gain that much from a size/weight standpoint? Or are they going for the efficiency angle alone? Perhaps the V8 to make it run smoother than a V6? Just curious what the thoughts behind it may be...
Performance numbers like what they are talking from a 4.5 liter power plant is impressive.
Technology marches on.
Where will we be in another 20 years??
Also mentioned a double overhead cam engine for the larger vehicles. Whoo Hoo.
Interesting

I like the following quote from the AutoWeek article Dr Lee linked.
[QUOTE]A diesel costs a consumer an average of $6,660 more than a comparable gasoline engine. But after 4
GM plans to add a 4.5-liter turbocharged V-8 diesel engine to the H2 and light-duty versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups.
The new engine will be a Duramax, but it will not share any parts with the current 6.6-liter Duramax that GM developed with Isuzu. GM says the new turbodiesel will produce at least 310 hp and 520 pounds-feet of torque and will be made in its Tonawanda, N.Y., plant, which is getting a $100 million makeover.
One of those will replace the 6.5 in the diesel Waggy...
