I have been pricing the spin on filter for my 2007 Allison and have gotten prices from $33 to $40. Is the right for a quality filter? I just think it seems really high, considering it's about the size of a lawnmower filter! I had the filter changed at my first Oil change (3000), and I plan on changing the spin on trans filter at every other oil change. I do about 1/2 city and 1/2 highway. Any suggestions where to buy quality filters at a decent price?

Try shopping TDP Advertisers (http://www.thedieselpage.com/vendors/main.htm). They will typically be 1/2 the cost or less of what you've seen.

I've been buying mine at a Allison dealer. $11 to 12 I think. I was told that NAPA has them for just a couple $$ more.

I got mine as well as fuel filters from one of our advertisers. Good pricing and great service. Ed

I bought a filter from the local NAPA. It looked like using it with the magnet would partially block flow to the filter since the holes were set in farther. I ended up getting Allison filters at a local truck parts dealer.

Just wondering if anyone else had noticed that, or left the magnet out with aftermarket filters?

I've used the Wix filters (same as Napa), and did notice the appearance of the hole blockage. I did some measuring, and there is no decrease in available flow, it just looks that way. Perhaps, the fluid has to spend more time going around the magnet, so it may be more likely to catch ferous particles. I have noticed no difference in tranny performance, with either the Allison or Wix fiters.
