I am considering a swap with a 6.2 diesel. I have both a 700R4 (about 1983 from a diesel, also have a 1989 from a V6) and a 4L60E (1996 from a 4.3 V6). It will be 4 wheel drive. Which trans would you use, what are the pros and cons of each? and will the 4L60E internals fit in the 700R4 case, to fit the transfer case, or will I have to get the 6 bolt adapter?. I would like to use the best of what I have. Looking for daily milage and maybe light occasional towing of a ski boat, but that is what the K3500 is for.

Tough one. If you use either of the ones from the gasser application, you will need to change the governors to get the proper shift points for the diesel. You will also need to get a diesel torque converter. I have heard the V6 trans does not have as many cluthes as the V8 models. The 4L60E is the same trans, just electronically controlled - I would avoid that for the simple matter of needing to run a transmission controller. No matter which one you use, you will need some upgrades to it. Personally, I would not use any of them in their current condition. I would sell off 2 of them and use the money to rebuild the remaining one with all the new good upgraded parts.

If you are going to bolt any of these trannies up behind a diesel you need one that was at least set up for a V8
The K case 700 R4 is the best one. (It has a large K molded right into the bell housing.

The governor can be swapped out easily.
Its behind the little round domed metal cover on the rear of the tranny.
The 4L60E needs a computer. The v6 units do not have enough clutches in them to hold a diesel.
The converter needs to be a diesel one too.
I have written several LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG posts on making a 700R live in this application.
have alook through the forum and see if you can find them.

Hope this helps

I was leaning toward using the 700R4 out of the 1983 diesel truck and getting the TC adapter for it. I have the short output shaft already. I will reread Robyn's posts on the 700R4, I read it once, but will go through it again, and then with my friend who will redo the trans for me.

I have a 1993 Grand Cheokee with a bad V8, and I am considering swapping one of the 6.2s (1983, and 1986) I have sitting behind the barn. I am considereing a NP231, or a Dana 20 TC with an OD, but the Dana will require a newly fabbed front axle passenger side pumpkin and an additional trans to TC adapter, the NP231 is a bolt in. Getting the ducks in a row before starting this project. I realize weight will be an issue for this swap. If I go ahead with this, I will post photos and project progress.

Thanks for the input.

That small V8 is a tight fit into those ZJ chassis. I have R&R'd enough of them to know there isn't much room. You would need to do some serious cutting to get that 6.2 into there. That would be a sweet swap though - it would have good power and get excellent mileage.
