Still kinda new to D/A and read awhile ago about people doing a 10K mile service on their allisons. Well I'm at 10K and want to do this but can't remember the particulars. Anyone help?

Thought it was just spinning off the filter and replacing the expelled fluid? Do you open the drain plug? I would think that this would let most of the fluid out. I remember something about just replacing about 1 gal. of fluid. Any help is much appriciated! When do you guys/gals do a full tranny service? Thanks!

I do the spin-on filter at 10K intervals. We pull the plug, and replace the ~7 quarts that drain out. (If you run the engine, shifting from R to D with your foot on the brake, you get closer to 9 quarts out.)

We tow constantly so 10K keeps me feeling good about the fluid. If you have a daily driver, I'd extend that significantly, but change anytime you tow heavy or in hot weather. Its cheap insurance.

There is another method listed here on TDP that is what Allision recommends for flushing the entire system. It involves removing hoses and running the engine in gear as well. More complete, but more involved.

Good luck!

So Mark, when you do your 10k maint. you pull the filter, then you remove the drain plug? and by doing just those two things you get approx. 7 qts. of fluid out? Just making sure, I plan on doing this, like you said as insurance, and want to have enough ATF on hand to replace. Thanks Mark! Shed:D

Yep. (If you decide to do the R-N-D thing, its probably best done over a pit than on a lift....)

This not something you would suggest doing in my driveway with stands and a jack? No access to a lift, possibly a makeshift pit, but....

I did mine in my driveway, but did not do the D-N-R thing. Just dropped the plug, changed the filter, and filled it back up. Don't forget the magnet when you change the filter. It needs to be put back in with the new filter. Ed

Sure, it could be done on ramps even. No wheel spin needed. I was just thinking safety with it in the air, going in and out of gear...

Just making sure I understand this right. You Jack the truck up, pull plug, pull filter. Then start truck with foot on brake and go thru the gears. This will not hurt the tranny and will drain more fluid?

I plan on just changing the 7 qts of fluid and filter. I have a daily driver, but it sits in traffic and its hot in So. Florida...
