View Full Version : no fuel to engine
Hi all, I just purchased my first diesel vehicle, a 1982 GMC 6.2L 4x4 Sierra Classic. It's a great truck but recently as I was driving it on the freeway the RPMs and the speed dropped as if there was no fuel getting to the engine. I had it towed from there and have not been able to start it since. I hoped it was the fuel filters (as the truck had been sitting for over a month without being driven) so I replaced them but I still can't get the truck to start. The engine will turn but won't catch. Since the truck was starting fine I don't think it's the glow plugs. I unplugged the fuel line coming out of the primary filter and tried to turn the engine assuming that fuel would spray out of the opening if fuel was in fact getting to the primary filter. No fuel came out. Are there any suggestions for what to try next?
Any help appreciated,

The lift pump on the lower passenger side of the engine may have gone.... if you are not getting fuel to the filter from the lift pump, you either have a broken, crimped or deteriorated rubber fuel line between the lift pump and the tank, or your lift pump has gone by the wayside. Before replacing the lift pump, I would highly recommend replacing the rubber lines that connect the metal fuel line sections to the tank and lift pump. Next step is to replace the lift pump. They are pretty inexpensive, but kind of a pain in the rear to get to the two bolts holding them on to the adapter on the block.
Good luck,
Kevin.

Maybe you genuinly ran out of fuel due to an inaccurate gauge?
Prime the fuel system by loosening a few injection lines on the injectors (3/4" open end wrench), just loosen the nut, not take it off.
Crank if over until you get fuel weeping out of the nut.
Tighten things back up and see about getting it started.
