PMD do it myself?

I have a 1998 1500 and im pritty sure that the PMD is bad i got a quote for $650 and wanted to see if i could do it my self any thoughts.

Yes, it can be a DIY fix.

You will have to remove the upper intake and then with some finagle-ing and possibly a modified tool or two you can R&R it.

Or you can remove the entire intake and get at it easy.

Or you can take the easy way out and leave the old unit in place and buy a new PMD on a heatsink with a reloction cable. Check with our supporting vendors and they can set you up. That way, the only thing to do is mount the new heatsink and unplug the old PMD and plug the cable extension in. It may cost a few bux more, but its far easier to do, and it gets the PMD off the pump and onto a heat sink. that would help prevent another PMD failure tremendously.

Yes. Most definately do it yourself.

The best option is to leave the original (presumed bad or going bad) PMD on the pump, and install a remote FSD (Fuel Solenoid Driver -- same as the PMD, only not on the pump). Several of our Vendors (http://www.thedieselpage.com/vendors/main.htm) offer remote FSDs with extended harness and heat sink. If your PMD is failing intermittent, it will still serve as a backup in a pinch if/when you have future failures. The $650 you were quoted will go a long way to install a more reliable and user friendly system, and keep some $$ in your pocket, now and later.

Search the Forum for installation options. Outside the engine compartment is best, and there are a lot of options for locations, depending on the length of the harness.
