So my engine swap is coming along OK. New engine is in and looking good, finally got the turbo mounted up yesterday, and the air filter and such.

So far my organization scheme, lots of little labelled baggies in numbered boxes, has worked pretty well. But it just failed me.

I have 4 bolts, 4 studs, and 4 nuts in a baggie labelled "fan bolts" (pictures below). The problem is that the bolts - which I first thought would just run through the clutch, through the pulley for the belt, and into the plate on the water pump - aren't long enough to do that. OK, next try is the studs, maybe they screw into the water pump and the rest goes up on top of that. Nope... doesn't sit right.

My pre-disassembly video didn't capture this and my manuals (all 3 of them!) seem to gloss over the specific fasteners to use here.

Can anybody help? Thanks!

Oh geez, it was a dumb question. Sorry.

I found the studs in the old water pump. Weird little studs. I can see why I didn't take them out since there is no place to get a wrench on them! Fortunately they were in there loosely enough to wrap a shop cloth on the end of a pair of vise grips and twist on the threads.

I guess both the bolts and the studs in the "fan bolts" bag are actually for something else... that worries me a bit. I'm sure I'll figure out where they go soon - I wouldn't have put them too far away from the part being disassembled...

Hey, while I'm on dumb questions... what's the purpose of the match marking that the manual says to do when pulling the fan clutch off of the water pump plate? Since I put on a new pump I've lost that marking, of course, but I didn't quite understand why exact alignment of that part was necessary anyway...

Thanks!

The fasteners in the picture look like valve cover bolts to me. The studs are located where the bracket for the heat shield would go on the RH side of the engine, for example, and the nuts would be used to retain the bracket. The LH valve cover also uses them for the injector line brackets and return line bracket.

Yes definately for the VC and specifically some of the small brackets that mount on the lower row of bolts
