Lube technician is a idiot

Had my oil changed Friday at a local dealership. Idiot put 5W30 oil, regular engine oil in my Duramax. Not sure what to do. After driving 30 miles, my engine light came on, and that's when I noticed the new sticker on the window, the reminder to next oil change. It show they put in 5W30.

I know from reading on internet, the 5W30 is not good on Diesel.:mad:
Back to the dealership tomorrow.
Rumor has it, that they now owe me a new Duramax.... Due to potential bearing damage, any truth in this.

I wouldn't think that it would have hurt anything for such a short time. But I would have the proper oil put in asap. The problem is that regular grade oils don't have the soot control for diesels and the turbo has requirements for protection. Good Luck.

There are 0W40 and 5W40 diesel oils out there. I guess i would bring it back the stealership, get the codes pulled and the oil with propper oil and oil filter replaced. See what these codes are... go from there.

Pull a sample from the 5-30 oil and have it analyzed if you're concerned. If the tempos have been low, it'll probably be fine.

We had the same problem with our truck. thankfully we noticed it when we were about 5 minutes away from the garage, so we turned around and had the oil changed again.

Haven't had any problems with it that seemed to be related to that oil though.

I'd make sure they did in fact use the worng oil before I went flaming anyone. They coulda just put the wrong type of oil on the sticker and really put the right oil in the truck. 5w30,,, while it may not be diesel engine oil, it's better then none at all and won't hurt as long as you (or is this case them) don't make a habit out of using it a lot or for great distances. Just have them get the right stuff in it asap!

I run 5W-30 Amsoil HD Diesel oil all winter in my Duramax and Bobcat loaders.But it is a Diesel rated oil. Is the oil they put in Diesel rated?.That would be my big consern at this point. Good Luck!

A related subject, friend telling me about a quick lube owner who has 8 or 9 locations, he budgets for 1-2 engine replacements per month!! Due to employee negligence, inexperience. Neighbor kid works three pits in a quicky place now, draining oil, pulling filters, greaseing. Well,,, greaseing when he has time, after trying not to forget the drain plugs or filters or properly tightening them. All while @ 17 years old thiking about his 78 Bronco w/ 37" tires and girlfriend, and listening to ribbing from fellow workers. His managers are trying to sell, sell, sell, to average $100.00 per invoice and they usually do ave $100 for a trip to the oil change quicky. Better to go to your favorite independant shop that does your repair work. bob.............

Technician put wrong label on windshield, but still change just to be sure.
It was the SES light (Engine) Dealership had to send truck to a local Diesel specialist to figure what the code was. It was just that the dealership didn't properly reset the ECM, after reprogramming my ECU. Due to a shutter at 45mph. :cool:
