Hello, just got my double roller timing chain and new gears gonna put em in this weekend. My question is, after I get the gears and chain in...does the injection pump have to line up line for line right on the money for the truck to be timed? or should I stay drivers side or passengers side? I Also would like to know what the symptoms would be lets say you had the a good timing chain with little or no wear and you advanced the pump all the way to the drivers side...what would the truck do? I ask this because when I bought this truck the pump was advanced all the way, come to find out all 8 injector nozzle were broken. I bought brand new bosch nozzles, pop tested them, but dont even want to start the truck until the new chain is in and the pump is set correctly Any help is greatly appreciated Thanks.

If the pump was timed with a worn chain/gears, it should be timed again with new chain/gears. The timing mark is the starting point. If the timing was close with a worn chain, it will be advanced with a new chain. If it seemed advanced with a worn chain, it will be really advanced with a new chain.

My suggestion.....
Unless your timing was fairly retarded with the old chain, I would reset the timing marks to dead on. From there, get it running and up to temp, and retime it with the new timing set. This should work well, regardless of the timing method you use.

See the thing is I have no idea whether it was really timed or not because the pump was cranked all the way to the drivers side, the injectors were shot, the return lines all leaked, it was a real basket case. Had billowing white smoke on startup, with no coolant loss or bubbles in the recovery tank. I'm a little bit nervous about doing the chain thats about the only thing I havent done to an engine. I'm hoping that the new chain, injectors, and set timing will help this beast out because with my rear end gears and turbo 400 its screaming at 60, and it might not be good to drive slow with screwy timing but its cant be good to drive it at 3000 rpm all day with the timing way off.

ps I know people say they drive at the governor limit with these motors, but is it REALLY ok to drive this thing almost wide open for long periods of time? the thought makes me want to cringe arggggg.

They will run against the governor all day long, for years. I've run mine that way for much of the 540K on it.

Back to your timing. I suggest you set it to the mark after the chain R/R. Running it too advanced for a length of time can cause damage. Too retarded will be gutless, quiet, and smoke (white/gray) a lot when cold to warm. If you're not comfortable with timing it yourself, get it to a good shop after you get it all buttoned back up, with the timing marks lined up. You may find it about right at the marks, anyway, and you won't hurt anything at OEM timing.
