View Full Version : DB2 Woes

I recently took my DB2 pump to a local shop to have it bench tested. Results were low fuel output at cranking and at WOT. The shop suspects the advance piston is worn out, but are telling me that the pump basically needs a new head/rotor and I'm looking at a little over 1k (Canadian) for a replacement (overhaul-exchange).
Anyone have suggestions as to if this pump is still 'operable' and if not, know where to get a good replacement at a better price? Thanks.

Worn head in the pump will cause hard starting, especially HOT.
Probably best finding another core to rebuild instead of a head. The advance piston will alter the timing, not the cranking pressure. Worn advance piston = low power.

Correct - the adv piston bore can be honed and go in with an oversize piston
But, that would also mean the camring bore would be worn, and no oversize replacement camring is available for that, so they replace the aluminum housing.
With that and the replacement head\rotor needed for lo-rpm and hot-start cure, you may as well start with another DB2

Ok, that seems to make sense why they would tell me the cam/rotor would have to be replaced in addition to the advance piston. Does a replacement pump and overhaul usually end up much cheaper than just exchanging a unit for an overhauled one?
The pump I have is a DB2829 4875, is there anything special about it that would make it worth keeping?
Thanks for the help.
No - that's a standard 6.2 IP, with 0.290" pump plungers.
Be a different story if it had 0.310" plungers, like for the 6.5TD.
A replacement used DB2 may be in the same\worse condition than yours, tho you may find a recently rebuilt unit in a boneyard.
Problem is, some 'rebuilds' consist of a coat of paint and crank up the transfer-pump pressure to overcome the internal head-rotor leakage
The 6.2 housing may be out of production - any oem-type 6.2 rebuilds get the stronger 6.5 housing, from what I've seen - has a cast-in date code on each side of the late housing.
95 would be 1995 - won't see that on pre-'92 pumps

Give Tim Wagner at www.accuratediesel.com a call if you plan to replace the IP. Very knowledgable and very nice to deal with.

Thanks again for all the help. The shop I took my pump to has a completely rebuilt pump for exchange (all new internals) which is what makes the unit pricey. Are most places good on their word if they claim to have done a 'complete' overhaul, vs. replacing some parts and turning up the pump?
I'll be sure to check out the link to the pump dealer. Thx.

WeaselWerks , Send me a PM if you are interested in a rebuilt Injector pump, I have a rebuilt pump that I have no use for that I will sell you for a good price. It has never been on an engine since it was rebuilt.
