Synthetic oil

I am interested in hearing from those of you using synthetic oils in a high mile (>120K), modified (chip'd and boost turned up) 6.5L truck that tows regularly.

1) How has oil consumption been?
2) What brand and weight do you use?
3) What change interval?

1) My impression is that oil consumption/leakage has gone down, it certainly has not gone up in my case.

2) 5W-40 Mobile Delvac 1

3) I did a couple changes at 6,000 miles along with an oil analysis. I've since added an Oilguard bypass. I'm on my way to a change and analysis at 10,000 miles. I'll be posting the results when I get there!

My truck sits outside during the day all winter long. It starts much easier and quieter with the synthetic. Cold starts are the main reason that I switched. Now I'm just trying to figure out a safe oil change interval. It's too expensive to dump it unnecessarily. Hope that helps.

1) Used a quart to 3k miles (35k on the motor)
2) Amsoil 5W-40 European Formula
3) Haven't decided yet, this is the first time I have run it in a diesel. Ran it in my gasser truck about 8k and changed it once a year. Time being the determining factor not miles. Hope to to do about the same in the diesel.

I went to the synthetic because of cold weather starting. It starts not pluged in at -20 every time.

I have had (2) motors in my truck and used (2) different oil regimens.

1) How has oil consumption been?
2) What brand and weight do you use?
3) What change interval?

Both motors were/are boosted and chipped with many other mods.

old motor had 135,000 when pulled the inside looked like new. Cross hatch in the cylinders looked like it was done yesterday and NO oil sludge ( lots of antifreeze sludge)
1)- Motor never used oil when standard oil was used. with synthetic it used/leaked about 1 qrt every 1500 miles.
2) Mobil 1 5w40 syn and Mobil Delvac 15w40 Reg
3)3000 miles reg. 6000miles syn

New motor has 25,000 miles
1)- motor uses about(no leaks) 1qrt every 6000 miles.
2) Mobil 1 5w40 syn after it had about 10,000 miles on it.
3)6000miles w/ large oil filter and amsoil bypass. I still change the reg filter every 3000 miles.

I have 186,000 miles on my truck owned it since new. I went to Rotella Synthetic about 3 years back and oil useage stayed at a quart every 1500-1700 miles unless I pull real hard then it goes to abbout 1,000 miles. No leaks change about every 3,000 miles went 4,000 on last change lot of hiway miles on this last change.

Although I suffered the same cracked block fate as many here, I had always used synthetic oil since new and at disassembly, 150K miles, the bores, journals, crank, and the complete top end showed no signs of wear. I am also using it in the new engine.

Although I don't pull, I have a 99 burb with 96,000 miles, which has used Amsoil since new. I knew the original owner, who used it religiously. It does have a bypass kit on it. I recently had a stud girdle kit installed, and while the pan was off, saw the cross-hatch on the cylinder walls. Couldn't see any cracking in the webbing as mentioned in other threads.

Jon - if you disconnect your CDR to intake boot line, at idle do you see any oil vapor escaping? My motor is a 1998 with ~98K miles on it. I see a fair amount of oil vapor, indicating blowby. Runs excellent, however with lots of power.

Wow. Thanks everyone for your advise. I have been using (burning) Rotella T Multigrade. Seemed to be the most commonly available anywhere on the road.

I plan to switch to Mobil 1 15-40 Synthetic. Main reason is the shop where I trade snowplowing for lubrication stocks this brand.

Anyone know where to buy Rotella synthetic in the Mpls area? I looked at Walmart in Maple Grove and all they had was the regular Rotella. I would like to save some money as the Amsoil is preaty expensive.

All premium synthetics are basically the same price for similar products. There's a reason why other "synthetics" are cheaper.

Dave, you can buy Amsoil with a commercial account 15w40 for 3.15 quart(2 10 qt jugs).

Dave check back at your Walmart and chat with the Lube & Tire manger the Rottella synthetic goes well and they don't seem to stock enough of it at times the self is empty. I have had them order me several cases at a time I now have a reserve so when I in Wally World I stop by the oil area an pick up a couple of gallons when it's on the self to keep my reserves up.

Thanks for the input guys. I am an amsoil prefered customer so I get the same price as a dealer. The 5W-40 is $4.52 a qt and you pay shipping too. It cost me $50 with the Amsoil filter to use Amsoil. I don't put that many miles on my truck so I would prefer to stay with the 5W-40 year round and change the oil just once a year. I only put about 6,000 miles a year on the truck. I want to stick with the 5W-40 so I can get it started in the boonies when it's -20 and I don't have a place to plug it in. The reason I brought up Rotella synthetic is I thought I remembered someone saying they bought it at Wally world for about $12/gal for 5W-40. I have looked their the last 2 times and they only have the regular Rotella. I will have to ask someone next time and also check at the Brooklyn Park store.
