It sounds like you're seeing plastic from the "governor weight retainer flex ring" (or something like that.) In simple terms, it means you'll need to remove the pump and get the newer style flex ring installed. I spent 2 1/2 years in Germany while in the army and had an ex-military Dodge M887 truck. Just outside of Kaiserslautern, Germany, there is (was in 1994 anyway) a guy doing business as "The Dutchman" who had just about everything you could think of for surplus US military trucks and parts. It might be worth a try to contact him for an updated injector pump from a humvee.
