View Full Version : Aftermarket Cams and Heads
I currently own 2 6.5TD's one with cracked heads the other has high mileage and will be my sons first vehicle. Being a machinst I would like to see just what is possibly from a 6.5 and will be rebuilding one of these know. All input reguarding internal performance parts is appreciated.
Its all here for the reading. Look up Ronniejoe's build up.
Just to wet your appetitie its good for 215-240 hp with bolt on mods and 300 hp with internal work. Maybe more but its not really a heavy enough block to live long. Keep us posted as to your ideas and progress others including me will be interested and if you want will provide constructive criticism.

Aftermarket Cams?
Not really tested.
I know of two shops offering regrinds. I've heard mixed results between them.
Both of the engines I know that were running the cams no longer run
As far as aftermarket heads, there aren't any offerings for "performance" aftermarket heads for the 6.5 (or 6.2). The aftermarket heads offered are recast heads, of Chinese origin.
It believed that new AM General/ GM heads are superior.
As far as performance, just beef it up!

I ran a Diesel Depot cam for a while... It helped with EGT's, but I can't say that I liked it that well. I sold it long ago and run a stock cam with less hassle. It would be ideal if a person could get blank cams and have them custom ground with different lift and duration. Then of course some flycut pistons would be in order too...
As far as heads go some people match the ports up with the gaskets. These heads lack material as it is so I doubt that much can be done without causing harm.
Honestly on a stock motor you won't likely see the difference. Maybe when you turn the fuel up it will matter, but with the limited ability there it most likely won't be worth the time or effort. If your current heads are cracked between the valves have them sleeved and pressured checked, other wise find some good used heads or fork over the $$ for new AMG castings. The China heads are something I would steer clear of...
