OK, I can't figure out which rear diff I have, and how much lube to put in it.

Only ID I saw on it was GM8, and 6906N ?

It's drained, and sealed back up.

A drain plug sure woulda made life easier..... so would a lift.

Do you refill these thru the vent ? I can't find any sorta fill plug on top.

Front diff is done, xfer case tomorrow.

Thanks.

the drain plug should be on the housing somewhere near the driveshaft/pinion yoke. take it out, and fill until fluid runs out and seal it back up.

Thanks, James.

I don't know much about diffs, I thought that fill plug was a set screw for something important, and that fill level would be up at least as high as the axles. Maybe it is, and I'm just not seeing it.

Onward through the fog.

there is no need for the level of fluid to be up above the axles..all the lube the axles need are at the end where there is metal-metal on the bearings in the full floating hubs.

Here's a thought:

When your truck is up on the lift, wheels and axle hanging down, fill level is very different than when filling on level ground.

Which is correct ?

I'm thinking that no one (except me) checks or fills while on the ground, and that I am probably under-filled.

Put almost 6 pints (3 qts) in.

I'll put it up on my buddies lift, tomorrow, and re-check.

Last time I filled mine it took about 3 qts.

no, you are right. filling it like that will work just fine. i fill mine on the ground all the time.

James, how often you fillin' it ? Leaking, or changing it out ?

Sure rolls faster and easier with the synth lube.

Thanks for the help.

I try to do it once a year, minimum. a light duty truck usually does fine with this service increment...if you tow a lot, do it sooner though. it's the heat buildup that kills the lube.
